Japanese Onigawara Paperweight – Oni Desk Ornament, Kawara Ceramic

This Japanese onigawara-style paperweight brings the dignified presence of the traditional guardian demon to the desk, the shelf or the tabletop. A finely modelled oni face, with gently curved horns, swirling brows and a broad, resolute nose, is rendered in low relief and finished in a soft, silvery grey. The expression is stern yet not unkind, in keeping with the character of the oni as a guardian figure.

Onigawara are the ornamental roof figures placed at the ridge ends of Japanese temples, castles and traditional houses, and they form part of a long protective tradition in Japanese architecture. The design of this paperweight is inspired by those roof ornaments. It is intended purely as a desk accessory and small ornament, not as an architectural piece.

Traditionally, onigawara are regarded as talismans, said to ward off evil and misfortune and to watch over the household beneath them. In that spirit, this paperweight may be enjoyed as a quiet, symbolic companion for a study or workspace, offered as a matter of tradition and belief rather than as a promise of any effect.

It is made in Japan from kawara, the traditional Japanese fired clay, and follows the onigawara style that belongs to Japan's traditional craft heritage. Beneath the face, a carved, flowing fringe forms a gently undulating lower edge. The reverse is flat and pale grey, so the piece rests steadily on paper. Colour may vary slightly with lighting and screen settings.
