This shop specializes in ONIGAWARA — the ogre tiles of Japan’s traditional roofs, made by the clay of the Japanese roof tile and finished by the secret ibushi method inherited for 1,400 years. Only the works of craftsmen who have worked on Kyoto’s national-treasure shrines and temples are sold here. And the masters behind them — Japan’s onigawara craftsmen — number only 80 in the world.

What is Onigawara?
For 1,400 years, demon-faced tiles have sat at the ridge ends of temples, shrines and samurai houses — the oni to turn away evil, waves against fire and flood, peaches for health and long life. Once forbidden to ordinary homes, today a small guardian can watch over your front door. Each piece is shaped by hand and smoked in the kiln using the ibushi method — no paint; the silver is carbon sealed into the clay.

Dried slowly before firing — rushing cracks the clay.
Smoke seals carbon into the clay; the silver is the fire itself. No paint.
