A Guardian for the New Year — Year-End & New Year Collection

For 1,400 years, onigawara — ogre tiles of fired clay — have watched over Japanese temples and homes from the ridge of the roof, cherished as guardians of the household. As the year turns, we have gathered a selection of handmade oni pieces for the season of giving: small guardians for an entrance or desk, wall pieces for a new home, and zodiac figures for the year ahead. 2027 is the Year of the Horse — in Japan, the horse has long been a symbol of moving forward.

Every piece is handmade by a master tile craftsman (onishi) in Japan and selected in Kyoto by a fifth-generation roof tile craftsman. We are Japan's only authorized onigawara specialty shop — a specialty shop where you can buy works by Japan's master onigawara craftsmen, of whom there are only 80 in the world.

The collection

  • Small guardians (from around $50) — a first onigawara for an entrance or desk, and a thoughtful Christmas gift.
  • Wall pieces ($120–370) — the centrepiece of the collection, for a new home or a housewarming gift.
  • Zodiac figures (from $180) — for 2027, the Year of the Horse, and the season's classic New Year gift.
  • Masterpieces ($800 and up) — one-of-a-kind works by master craftsmen, and made-to-order pieces for homes, shops and hotels on request.

Ordering for the season

Shipping is included; customs duties are not included and may be billed by the courier on delivery. Many pieces are made to order — please allow around 1.5 months, and order early for Christmas delivery. The final order date for Christmas delivery will be announced here once carrier deadlines are confirmed. If a piece ever arrives damaged, send us a photo and we will replace it.

鬼瓦は約1,400年、寺院や家の屋根の棟の上から家を見守り、魔除けとして大切にされてきました。年の瀬にあたり、贈り物と新しい年の家に向けた手作りの鬼瓦を集めました。玄関やデスクに置ける小さな守り鬼、新築の家に迎える壁掛け、そして来年の干支の置物まで。2027年は午年 — 馬は古くから「前へ進む」象とされてきた動物です。

すべての作品は、日本の瓦職人（鬼師）が手作りし、京都の瓦屋五代目が自ら選んだものです。当店は日本全国の職人の鬼瓦を扱う、唯一の公認・鬼瓦専門店です。世界に80人しかいない日本の名工鬼瓦職人の作品が購入できる専門店として、全国の名工の作品をお届けします。
