Japanese Onigawara Kawara Oni Figurine, Charcoal Grey Ceramic Decorative Ornament

Sold by an authorized seller from Japan's kawara industry — and a craftsman myself.

This small ceramic oni figurine is a decorative ornament inspired by the onigawara, the guardian oni faces of traditional Japanese architecture. It brings that long-standing protective motif indoors as an interior talisman for the home.

The oni is portrayed with wide, rounded eyes beneath a deeply furrowed brow. Textured, leaf-like eyebrows sweep across the face, and a pair of horns rises above. The mouth is parted to show fangs, framed by a finely incised beard of pointed strands that runs along the jaw. Rows of rounded studs border the face on both sides and give the composition a formal, sculptural character. The surface is a soft, matte charcoal grey, which may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen.

Traditionally, the onigawara oni is regarded as a talisman, said to ward off evil and misfortune and to watch over the household. These are long-held beliefs rather than assured effects, and they are part of the quiet meaning that makes the form so enduring.

This decorative oni figurine is made in Japan of fired ceramic clay in a Japanese traditional craft style. It suits a collector's shelf, a desk, an alcove or a considered corner of the home.
