Fujin and Raijin Relief Plate Okimono, Japanese Ceramic, Gray

Sold by an authorized seller from Japan's kawara industry — and a craftsman myself.

This relief plate okimono presents Fujin, the god of wind, and Raijin, the god of thunder, in finely modelled low relief. The two deities move through softly stylised clouds, their sashes and flowing drapery carrying a sense of motion across the surface. Their expressions are fierce yet composed, with wild hair and strongly defined features. The whole is finished in a subdued gray with a fine matte texture. It is intended to stand on a shelf, desk or tabletop as a quiet ornament. Colour may vary slightly with lighting.

Onigawara are ornamental roof figures traditionally placed at the ridge ends of Japanese temples, castles and traditional houses. They belong to a long protective tradition in Japanese architecture, in which the guardian figure on the roof was regarded as a watchful presence over the building beneath it.

In that tradition, onigawara are said to serve as talismans, traditionally believed to ward off evil and misfortune and to watch over the household. This okimono carries the spirit of that custom into the interior, where it may be appreciated as a symbolic and decorative presence.

It is a Japanese traditional craft form, made in Japan of kawara, the traditional Japanese fired clay, in the classic onigawara style.
