Japanese Onigawara Ridge-End Roof Tile, Chrysanthemum and Cloud Relief, Grey

Onigawara are the ornamental ridge-end tiles set at the gables and ridges of Japanese temples, castles and traditional houses. They form part of a long architectural tradition in which the roofline was adorned as well as protected. This ridge-end tile follows that tradition, with a composed, sculptural presence suited to quiet display.

The tile is crowned by a softly arched crest of carved cloud scrolls. Beneath it, a recessed panel with a gently shaped oval opening is framed by smooth, uncluttered surfaces. On either side, a large chrysanthemum bloom with finely incised petals rests above a fuller, layered blossom, and a densely modelled chrysanthemum sits at the centre. Two small heart-shaped openings and sweeping, wave-like forms curving into scrolled ends complete the composition. The finish is a cool grey with a subtle metallic sheen; the colour may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen.

Traditionally, onigawara are regarded as talismans, believed to ward off evil and misfortune and to watch over the household beneath them. Such meanings are held as long-standing belief and custom, and are offered here in that spirit.

This piece is made in Japan of kawara, the traditional Japanese fired clay (ceramic) used for roof tiles. It reflects a Japanese traditional craft form and will suit a tokonoma, entryway, study or gallery shelf.
