The finish is a deep charcoal grey with a soft, slightly lustrous surface. Colour may vary a little with lighting.

Onigawara are ornamental ridge-end tiles that were placed on the roofs of Japanese temples, castles and traditional houses. They belong to a long protective tradition in Japanese architecture, in which a fierce guardian face crowned the roofline.

Traditionally, the oni countenance is regarded as a talisman. It is said to ward off evil and misfortune and to watch over the household beneath it. This figurine carries that spirit into the interior, as a quiet and dignified accent for a study, alcove or display shelf.

The piece is a Japanese traditional craft form. It is made in Japan of kawara, the traditional Japanese fired clay, and is a ceramic.
