For 1,400 years, onigawara — ogre-faced roof tiles of fired clay — have watched over Japanese temples and homes from the ridge of the roof, believed to guard the house and everyone in it. What once belonged only on a roof can now live in your home.
Onigawara Market (鬼瓦市場) is Japan's only authorized specialty shop for onigawara. From our shop in Kyoto, we gather works by Japan's master onigawara craftsmen — onishi — of whom only 80 remain in the world. Each piece is made from real roof-tile clay — formed in a traditional mold or shaped by hand, then finished by hand — and selected in Kyoto for the home: no two are exactly alike.
The shop is run by a fifth-generation Kyoto roof-tile family, and that eye for tile is what the selection rests on — but the works themselves come from master craftsmen across Japan, gathered in one specialty shop for the first time.

鬼瓦市場は、日本全国の鬼瓦職人の作品を扱う、唯一の公認・鬼瓦専門店です。京都の店から、世界に80人しかいない日本の名工・鬼師の作品を集めています。すべての作品は本物の瓦土から作られ、伝統的な型で形作られるものも、職人の手で形作られるものもあり、手で仕上げられたもの。京都で家に迎えるために選ばれたもの。一つとして同じものはありません。
店は京都の瓦屋五代目の家系が営み、その目利きが選定の土台になっています。けれど主役は、全国の名工の作品そのもの。全国の名工の作品を一つの専門店に集めた店です。
